The sure sign of a well-struck golf shot is the "whoosh" sound made through impact as the ball compresses against the clubface. When I feel (or hear) that I'm slapping the ball instead of compressing it, I know I've lost my spine angle during the backswing, which, in turn, causes a reverse pivot and a weak, sliding move through impact.
